No Smoking Please

As anyone who has traveled in Europe knows, Europeans are heavy smokers. Emphasis here is on heavy. Nothing ruins the enjoyment of a great meal like the strong odor of tobaco smoke. Several years ago we were actually forced to leave an incredibly wonderful meal in a Paris restaurant as the smoke from one chain-smoking patron was so overwhelming that we could barely breathe and actually lost our ability to taste the meal. This individual in fact smoked while eating.

Well, there is relief in sight.

Paris, France, has gone smoke-free in all public spaces, including cafés and restaurants, starting January 2, 2008. The city approached the ban in stages: it outlawed smoking in venues like schools and hospitals in February of 2007, but granted a few additional months for patrons of bars, cafes, and restaurants. Hats Off to the Parisians for this effort.

Now, if only we could get the same law passed in other European cities.

What is the policy for smoking aboard ship? Is it ok on the deck (outdoors) but not in the dining areas? Are there cabins that are smoking ones, and then does that mean that there are those that are non-smoking?

This is a good subject to bring up...I definitly want to make sure I don't get a smoker's room to spend my 2 weeks in! Blech!

btw, if you want to see who I am, check my profile...;)

Hey Amused:

Thanks for visiting our blog and leaving your comment.

The policies for smoking aboard ship vary by cruiseline. Some limit public area smoking to a small area outside on one side of the ship while others, especially the European Lines, allow smoking almost everywhere on the ship. Most ships' casinos allow smoking and, in some cases, it's so thick you can cut in with a knife.

None, that we know of, allow smoking in the dining areas.

Some lines prohibit smoking in staterooms while others allow it but prohibit smoking on the balconies. All prohibit tossing butts over the side. This is what started a major fire a couple years ago.

Although we once refused a room in a Chicago Hotel because it wreaked of smoke, we have never had a stateroom that smelled of smoke. We don't know of any lines having smoking and non-smoking rooms.

Just imagine a smoking ban in the building on Front Street in Uniondale, Long Island. Boy, times have changed!!!
